Garden

Garden is a magic word. Garden of forking paths. Garden of earthly delights. The quiet garden. Sound garden. Garden of Eden. The tangled garden—one of my favourite Group of Seven paintings. Well, at the Centre here, we planted a test garden (with a little help from our friends). The garden thrived. One of my fears was that it would block our view of the cove, but really the garden became part of the view. As visitors approach, they become aware of buildings and garden–the nature that we tend that lives beside us–and then they see the nature that tends itself, the forest and the distant ocean. Within this balance of wild and tame, the test garden is modest but productive, and full of familiar and satisfying things.
